Areas Of Expertise
Some programs refuse to work with certain clients. That’s not in our nature. Bring us any case, no matter the level of difficulty, and we will work with it with creativity and sensitivity. We’ve seen it all and we have the expertise to deal with a wide range of cases with varying degrees of difficulty. So don’t hesitate, we’ll take on the hard cases. Some of our key strengths are listed below:
School-Related Issues
The school environment can be intimidating to some. This may be related to a variety of issues: depression, anxiety, bullying and more chronic mental health issues such as Autism Spectrum Disorder or others. At The Shoreline Therapy Center we have a history of dealing effectively with schools, pediatricians and other therapists to help children and young adults better exist in the school environment.
Behavioral Issues
Behavioral issues affect all age groups. In the classroom, it could be tardiness or cutting classes, inappropriate use of cellphones, a disregard of deadlines and lack of respect for authority. For adults it can be overwhelming stress and anxiety at work, lack of motivation, burnout caused by an unrealistic workload or a variety of other issues. At The Shoreline Therapy Center, we have dealt with all of these issues and devise therapies that address these issues so our clients can have more productive and happy work and home lives.
Family Systems
We’re all part of a family, defined narrowly or broadly. And, predictably, many of our cases involve issues within the family. That’s why we regularly include other family members within the therapeutic process. Our whole philosophy is based on the premise that our clients have to be able to function independently within the key systems in which they live, starting with the family but extending to work, school and the community at large. As a result, we always include those systems within our therapeutic process.
Anxiety
Anxiety-related issues can quickly turn a normally functioning person into a dysfunctional person. Anxiety issues engender fear, nervousness, panic attacks, feelings of doom and can also affect one’s physical health. People overwhelmed by anxiety cannot perform certain tasks they performed easily in the past. At The Shoreline Therapy Center we have treated all forms of anxiety disorders and are particularly experienced in working with our clients so as to minimize, if not eliminate, the impact of these issues on their school, work and family lives.
Depression
Depression can sap the life right out of a person. Either triggered by an external event — such as a firing, a divorce or breakup or a death — or by a genetic disorder, depression is a stultifying experience for both the one affected and their loved ones. At The Shoreline Therapy Center we understand that depression can be moderated if not outright eliminated. We also understand that chronic or acute depression can rob one of months to years of their life, living without hope, without interest and without the will to live on.
Trauma
A sudden disruption in one’s life — a death in the family, a breakup, a major accident, severe bullying in school — can trigger any of the issues cited here. Usually trauma casts only a temporary hold on one’s life, but at its point of impact, can be very severe and a source of longer-term damage. At The Shoreline Therapy Center we can help clients deal with the source of the trauma and then guide them more quickly and thoroughly along the path back to normalcy.
ADD/ADHD
ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder)/ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) can cause problems during any stage of life. Typically, one suffering from these conditions has a tendency to drift off into states of inattention, act without thinking and demonstrate elevated states of restlessness among other symptoms. Our therapists can teach their clients coping skills which can help moderate the effects of this condition. In the case of children, we also work with the schools to help them understand what the child is experiencing. Our coaches can also help both children and adults with executive functioning skills.
Autism Spectrum Disorder
There are various types and symptoms of Autism. But almost all afflicted by the disorder have some degree of difficulty with communications and social skills, demonstrate repetitive behaviors and, at times, prefer to be alone. ASD often manifests itself when a child begins school. We can help and teach such children to better function within their school communities. We also have treated quite a few adults with ASD by helping them integrate better into their family, workplace and community environments.
Neuroplasticity
Much research has been done on how the human brain can build new neural pathways in response to an individual’s experiences and/or to compensate for damage to the brain or other organs. Historically, the medical community believed that this plasticity only occurred during early childhood development. Now it has been proven to continue during the adult years. At The Shoreline Therapy Center we have experience in designing therapeutic programs that help build new positive neural pathways for our clients.
