What Is Academic Therapy?
Academic Therapy is a coordinated, intensive service that blends Shoreline’s therapeutic care with The Learning Consultants’ academic expertise. It is designed for students whose schooling has been interrupted by emotional or mental health challenges and who now face both academic gaps and ongoing therapeutic needs.
Instead of treating “school” and “mental health” as separate issues, Academic Therapy brings them together. Shoreline clinicians, coaches, and case managers work hand-in-hand with Learning Consultants’ academic specialists to create a single, integrated plan. Students receive support for mood, anxiety, and emotional regulation while simultaneously rebuilding academic skills and confidence.
Families do not have to choose between therapy and tutoring. Academic Therapy gives them a unified team that understands how emotional regulation, executive functioning, and academic performance all interact.
Who is Academic Therapy for?
Academic Therapy is ideal for:
- Students stepping down from or between therapeutic placements who are behind academically
- Students whose anxiety, depression, or emotional dysregulation has disrupted school attendance or performance
- Students with learning differences who also need ongoing therapeutic support
- Students in partial hospital, IOP, or wraparound programs who must maintain academic progress
- College-bound students who need both executive functioning support and targeted academic remediation
Academic Therapy supports learners from kindergarten through college age, with the greatest needs typically seen in middle and high school.
How Does Academic Therapy Work?
Every Academic Therapy plan is customized by a Shoreline clinician in close collaboration with The Learning Consultants’ team.
Core Components
- Integrated team:
Shoreline therapists, coaches, and case managers coordinate care with The Learning Consultants’ academic specialists, so everyone is working from the same plan. - Academic assessment and planning:
The Learning Consultants evaluate where the student is academically, identify gaps, and design an individualized learning plan that aligns with therapeutic goals. - Therapeutic support woven into the school day: Shoreline provides therapy, coaching, and emotional regulation support alongside academic sessions, rather than as a separate process.
- Executive functioning support:
Students receive direct help with organization, planning, initiation, and follow-through. All skills that are essential for re-entering or remaining in school. - Flexible intensity: Plans can range from one session per week to highly intensive programs of 15–20 hours per week, depending on the level of need and stage of transition.
- Transition planning:
The team collaborates with families, schools, and districts to prepare students for their next placement, whether that is a mainstream school, therapeutic program, or college.
